Storm Damage - here are some things you should do

Storm Damage to my house or car what should I do?

Am I covered for storm damage?

If you have home insurance then cover for storm damage applies. If there is damage to the building or the contents of your home as a direct result of Ophelia then you will be fully covered but there may be an excess depending on your policy. The excess is the amount that you may have to pay first before the insurance kicks in. Typically this could be the first €500 but it depends on your policy

What may not be covered?

Somethings on your property may not be covered such as garden furniture, gates, hedges and fences

What if the slates blew off my roof am I covered for the damage?

Yes and depending on your policy you may also be covered for emergency repairs to stop the elements getting in and then covered for a comprehensive repairs and renewal at a later stage. If you are making temporary repairs ensure that you document the work, take pictures and keep all receipts.

What happens if there is damage done to my car from fallen branches, slates or other debris?

If you have comprehensive insurance you are covered for the damage caused by storm related damage but if you only have 3rd party fire and theft you are not.

So if you have discovered damage to your house or car what should you do now?

  • Take photographs and videos of the damage to show your insurance company. Ring them as soon as it is practical to inform them of the damage done. They will advise you on the next steps to take
  • Secure your property from further damage. Do whatever temporary repairs are required to prevent further damage, make sure you record the work with both photos and videos
  • Remove damaged or wet contents from in or around the house but do not dispose of them. Keep them so that the insurance assessor can see and also document them
  • Make a list of the damage and if the damage is quite substantial it would be a good idea to appoint a loss adjuster to help you with your claim for the damage done
  • If you have to replace something to make the house safe or habitable, make sure that you keep the receipts
  • If you have had to move out from your hose because of extensive damage ensure that that you tell your insurer that you have had to temporary leave the property due to health and safety reasons
